Understanding the Underserved Needs of Youth-At-Risk in Singapore: a Self-Determination Approach

Publication Date: 2019

The study identifies the gaps in services for youth-at-risk and makes recommendations to bridge these gaps. 21 social service professionals and 45 at-risk youth aged between 15-25 were interviewed. Youth participants also completed a short survey on needs satisfaction, life satisfaction and resilience outcomes. Results revealed a mismatch between the social service programmes and youths’ articulated needs, and highlighted the importance of considering the role of psychological need for autonomy and relatedness in bridging the gap.
