Creed on the Street: Loneliness among the Hidden Youth
Creed on the Street is a series of night discussions on pertinent social issues in Singapore for young adults. On 7 November, the Young Adults Committee invited Catholic young adults from all over Singapore to gather to discuss loneliness in Singapore, especially for youths. But first, the night began with informal conversations over pizza and ice cream!
For the main event itself, committee members gave a quick overview of subject, after which participants spoke to one another about their own experiences and their thoughts on the matter. Some were trained therapists who shared what they learned from their work experience. It was truly a complicated and many-sided social issue.
The night ended with a facilitator summarising the discussion and how the Church's social teachings could be relevant for the topic and how through that we could see it with eyes of faith. We look forward to the next iteration on a different topic!
Night Mission with Catholic Welfare Services
On 8 March and 14 June, the Young Adults Committee brought young adult Catholics from various parishes to join the Night Mission programme by Catholic Welfare Services. The Night Mission is a weekly outreach and befriending effort to rough sleepers in Bras Basah, Bedok and Ang Mo Kio. This collaboration aimed to promote outreach to the marginalised and encourage young adults to do long-term volunteering in response to the Gospel’s call to love one’s neighbour.
The evening began with the committee’s presentation on Catholic Social Teaching and its application, followed by discussions among the young adult participants. Afterwards, Brian from Catholic Welfare Services introduced the Night Mission, its history and aims, as well as how it fits into its larger effort to reach out to rough sleepers and reintegrate them to society.
After the presentations, participants packed buns and drinks together, which would be used as conversation starters, and proceeded to the walking routes. Joining the regular Night Mission volunteers, the young adults participated in conversations with homeless persons, some of whom were candid in sharing their life stories. It was truly an encounter. The night then ended with closing prayer.
