Workshop on Catholic Social Teaching (CST)

September 19, 2015 @ 9:00 am - 2:00 pm

CST workshop poster 19 Sept 2015

By Fr David Garcia, OP

We face a complexity of issues today: challenges at work, rising materialism, families breaking up, an increasing divide between rich and poor, climate change and the list goes on. Each day raises more questions than we care to reflect on. For instance: How do I decide what and how much to buy? Should I give money to that handicapped person who is begging down the street? How should I behave towards the foreign workers around me? Why should I care what my company produces? How should I react to so much disaster in the news?”
Beneath all these questions lies a most fundamental one: what does it mean to live out our faith today? In other words, what are the concrete ways in which we can put into practice the Gospel command to “love our neighbour?”
Fortunately we are not left in the lurch when it comes to living our Christian mission in the face of today’s circumstances. The Church felt the need to engage in a more intense reflection about these things. It pondered on the question of the dignity of the human person and how society can better uphold this dignity. Even in our present times, the Church continues to reflect on the social conditions of the day in the light of our faith and highlighting some principles with which to approach the contemporary issues. These principles are based on teachings from Scripture and the Tradition of the Church. The principles are often referred to as Catholic Social Principles or Doctrines.
