The gospels tell us that the two greatest commandments are to love God and to love our neighbour. Then, 1 John 4 tells us that these two are tied together because God is love, and we cannot love God without loving our neighbour.
But what does it mean to love our neighbour today? The Church’s social teachings are always a response to the challenges in society today in light of the Gospel, especially for our neighbour in greatest need.

The Church seeks but a solitary goal: to carry forward the work of Christ . . . To carry out such a task, the Church has always had the duty of examining the signs of the times and of interpreting them in the light of the Gospel.
