  Boys' Town

The founder, Brother Vincent, a prisoner of war during the Japanese occupation, saw the need for an institution to care for boys displaced by the war; youth from poor families, troubled and neglected youth who survived the brutality of the war, only to face deprivation during peace. His concern was shared by fellow prisoner of war, Australian philanthropist William T McDermott. Together, they conceived the idea of Boys' Town.

After the war, with McDermott's first donation of $50,000, and 20 acres of church land obtained by the Gabrielite Brothers, the building of Boys' Town began. In January 1948, Boys’ Town materialized.

Boys' Town Singapore is a unique Catholic institution dedicated to providing guidance, shelter, education, vocational training and practical living skills to youth. It runs a Boarding Home which is responsible for residential care for boys. The boys come from diverse backgrounds; poor & middle-class families, single-parent, restructured families, as well as intact family units. Many come at a time when facing difficulties. Their difficulties may stem from negative peer pressure, lack of supervision and care, poor parenting skills and family crisis.

Boys' Town follow a simple philosophy - God made every person good. It is committed to building a loving environment to nurture this goodness in the boys.

Their motto is - "He ain't heavy, he's my brother".

Under a disciplined system, it offers various structured programmes to help and guide these boys. These programmes include:

counselling (personal, group work, family therapy)
moral/religious instructions
physical & social development
tuition

In addition, various extra-curricular activities are provided for the boys' overall development. These include sports, music & drama and hobby clubs.

Boys' Town has 3 dormitories capable of housing 100 teenage boys. In the last 50 over years, thousands of youth have passed through its gates.
