The International Order
St John Baptist de La Salle founded the Brothers of the Christian Schools in 1680. He was the first son of a wealthy family and was ordained a priest on 9 April 1678.
At that time, most of the people were extremely poor and could not send their children to school. Moved by the plight of the poor, he became determined to put his own talents and advanced education |

at the service of the children. He abandoned his family home and renounced his wealth, moved in with the teachers, and formed the community that became known as the Brothers of the Christian Schools.
The educational establishment resented his innovative methods and his insistence on gratuity for all, regardless of whether they could afford to pay. Nevertheless De La Salle and his Brothers succeeded in creating a network of quality schools throughout France. Today, the Lasallian educators serve over 800,000 students in 80 countries. |

The Order in Singapore
In 1852, six De La Salle Brothers from Europe arrived at the invitation Fr Jean-Marie Beurel. Three remained in Singapore – Brothers Liefroy Bajon, Gregory Connolly, and Switbert Doyle – and three went to Penang to found St Xavier’s Institution.
The first Christian Brothers' school, St John's School, was started in the former Catholic chapel in Bras Basah Road. When the student |

population rose, there was a need to expand the premises. The cornerstone of a new school building was laid on 19 March 1855, the feast of St Joseph, and the school was renamed St Joseph's Institution (SJI).
In 1879, the Portugese Mission set up St Anthony's Boys' School (today St Anthony's Primary) and asked the Brothers to take over its management in 1938. A growing demand for places at SJI led to the building of St Patrick's School in 1933, De La Salle School in 1952, St Michael's School in 1954 (now renamed SJI Junior), and St Stephen's School in 1957.
Today, the Brothers continue to strive to provide quality education and ensure that the schools are always open to the poor of society. |

De La Salle Schools
In line with their charism, the De La Salle Brothers administer a number of schools namely; St Joseph's Institution, St Joseph's Institution Junior, St Joseph's Institution International, St Patrick's School, De La Salle School, St Stephen's School and St Anthony's Primary. The schools create a climate that fosters a young person's spiritual, intellectual, social, and physical growth. At the heart of this God-centred process is the dynamic relationship between student and teacher.
