Advent 2007 Charity Projects at Parishes

CHURCH OF OUR LADY QUEEN OF PEACE

Christmas has fast becoming a secular event dedicated to satisfying our hedonistic desires. In order to help our parishioners rediscover the true meaning of Christmas we have decided to adopt an outreach program to enable them to experience the joy of service. At the same time we will be bringing the Christ’s love to the underprivileged and rejects of society. There will be a series of activities which will include advent reflection, fund raising, donation of “love parcels” by individuals/families in the parish and a mission trip by the youths from 14th to 21st Dec. The youths will be putting up a nativity play to explain to the Cambodian kids the meaning of Christmas.
Don Bosco Chreh School Extension Project
The Don Bosco Chreh School started as an Sunday outreach program in a small shed in a muddy field. In 2002 the village headman of Phum Chreh asked the sisters to start an elementary school to cater to the village children who would otherwise be deprived of an education.

In 2002 the sisters started a school from kindergarten level up to Grade 6. The school survives totally from donations from well wishers. After Grade 6 the more promising students go to schools in Phnom Penh if their parents can afford it (which is very rare) or if they can obtain scholarships. We have started a scholarship scheme with Raffles Girls Primary School. However fully 60 – 70 % of the students will not be able to afford to go on to Grade 7 or vocational school. In order to prevent this group of students from ending up on the streets the sisters are trying to extend the classes up to Grade 9.

Already the school houses a population of some 420 students. In order to cater to the proposed expansion of classes the sisters intend to add a 3 rd storey to the existing 2 storey structure. This will mean an additional of 4 classrooms with a total floor area of approximately 4,000 sq feet. In phase one of the project, the sisters intend to build a 3rd storey(inclusive of the roof) which will cost US$52,000. In phase 2 of the project we hope to raise money to construct another building to alleviate the over crowding and to develop more facilities. At the moment the functioning of the school is impaired by the lack of electricity.

Education is the only way out of poverty for the impoverished children of Cambodia. The school is a sanctuary for many of the students who get their one meal a day in the school. Recently Don Bosco Chreh School was held up as a model for other schools by the Minister of Education in terms of its academic standard and hygiene (thanks partly to the water filtration systems which we supplied last year). If we can build the extension to the school some 200 students (from Grade 7 to Grade 9) will benefit each year.
